I am a long time Mac user.

Reportedly in development for 5 years, this software does protect from viruses, including protecting your Mac from being a carrier of Windows viruses. However, there has never been an "in the wild" Mac virus.

My cable company is offering Norton as part of their service. Virus scanning is too intrusive. At least, this doesn't have the crappy firewall as in the Norton suite, but that's not saying much.

The only real reason for an AV on the Mac is to protect Windows users from files other Windows users may have sent you. That said, there is a much better, less intrusive product called Intego VirusBarrier that catches Windows viruses, in combination with the NetBarrier firewall which is extremely customizable. I'm now using the free Sophos AV software, and recommend it highly.

So many of my Mac computer friends say Mac computers don't get viruses or that the ones they do get are harmless. Well, some years ago, I did get virus infection on a PowerBook Mac computer and Norton NAV software along with a lot of help from Norton technicians, is how I was able to get rid of the viruses & Trojans on my Mac. Needless to say, I have always used the most recent and updated versions of Norton NAV on my Mac computers every since. Whether it's needed or not, I prefer taking all preventive measures I can in addition to those inherent in OSX and programs such as "Little Snitch", in trying to keep my MACs and data safe; and, NAV software is a part of these efforts.

I bought this software to solve a particular problem virus that was working over my machine and it nailed it. We are networked in my office and someone else had downloaded a FREE game off of the net and the virus was in that file on their hard drive. When it was active, it was reading my email address files and using those to send out emails showing a link to a pharmaceutical web site. These emails showed MY EMAIL ADDRESS as the sender.

Since I ran the Norton program, no more emails being received by my contacts.

Norton Antivirus also identified two other infected files on my machine and so, after deleting the offending file off of my coworker's machine and the two image files on mine... POOF! Voila... no more virus activity.

It now runs in background on my machine and checks each file I download to my hard drive. I do a lot of graphics design so I'm snagging logos off of client's web sites, free clip art, etc. all the time. Now, I feel a lot better... Read more
