Of course McAfee and Norton will try to have you renew their product for the full price, that is how they make the money. The lazy and stupid people will go ahead and renew without shopping around. If you are smart and use your head like you are supposed to, you will shop around and usually find the newer retail version for cheaper than the renewal fee. All you do is input the new CD Key into your account and you are golden. McAfee is so much better than Norton. It takes less memory usage and does not slow down your computer. I have been working in the IT industry for the past 7 years and basically only use McAfee. It's easy to use and setup. It's on all the work computers and personal computers. Have never had any issues with it unlike Norton. Norton would still permit spyware and virus to enter where mcafee stops it dead. I had a paid subscription with a different security company on my laptop, so I didn't install Total Protection on it. In January I got a NASTY virus (from a 'safe' website that I had visited 100's of times) on my laptop that damaged my Windows 7 and made it impossible to access the internet-even when hooked up with the cable. Needless to say once I was up and running I installed McAfee on my laptop. I have not had any trouble with my computer since. I know that there are times when 'subscription renewal' pop-ups get annoying, but I DID NOT have to enter my credit card information when I purchased Total Protection 2012-if they had asked for such, I would've returned the product for a refund. Use your head for something more than a hat rack is my advice. This review is from: McAfeeTotal Protection 3PCs 2013 (CD-ROM) It should have been a 10 minute job but took two days , two calls to tech support, four reboots... to install the software. Where as the tech support was available, they were download, uninstalling, re-installing, running cleanup programs... It was never clear why it should have been such a trial. It is a new laptop, ie. one year old, with the insalled version expired. The new version after installing would not consistently start up. It is now stable and providing good service. There is definitely a need to more work on the installation and start up process so that the excellent virus feature can work.
